The filming of Gilligan’s island took place in Studio City, California. This stage was also later used to tape The Mary Tyler Moore Show and even Roseanne. During off season, the lagoon was drained and used mainly for parking. This was the last surviving object from the show when it was broken down in 1997 to expand the set.
Not all the scenes were shot on the set. Most of the Cave scenes were shot on the Newport Beach in California. Across all of the southern tip of the Balboa Peninsula, which is a park just off Ocean Boulevard.
Overall there were four different boats that were featured in show as Minnow. The first one was used in the opening credits and was rented from the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. The second boat can be seen in the second and third season of the opening credits and was sold in Vancouver island in 2006. The third boat was mainly used for just beach scenes after it was towed to Kauai in Hawaii. The fourth Minnow was built in the studio and got its name from an ironic joke. The boat was named after Newton Minow, who is the chairman of the U.S. FCC. He was most famous for saying that television is “a vast wasteland”.
